Concept Narrative

To create a wayfinding system that works in West Hall I used the shape everyone encounters when they enter the building, a circle. The hardest part of navigating each floor is which direction should a person initially go to find the classroom, lab, or office they are looking for. All the floors have a similar sectioned layout which creates 3 different ways to go (expect the sub level). By creating gaps in the circle and giving the information of what it that way, a person would be able to go into the correct section the first time, not after checking each one around the circle. I choose to leave the wall decals gray or black and only change the colors of the door and directories signs to green to still remain within the theme of the building. The bright orange and green that are on most of the painted walls could clash with bright, graphic designs. I added an element to the door signs, a clear plastic box with a frame that any staff member’s office can have a place for their information, workspaces can have clear time of when that space is available and each semester the class name and time can be posted there to help new students. Using Helvetica for the majority of the type with some typeface variations is readable and familiar to new students or guests. Having the numbers of each floor be a different font (Niagara Solid) that creates visual interest, especially the sublevel letters. Replacing the signage in the building and adding wall decals could elevate the building to a fresh exciting place to learn, grow and create connections.
